Cocoon arrives at your home with a blank brain and from the moment you install, Cocoon will begin it's learning journey.
Cocoon continually learns from the Subsound generated in your home to adapt to the changes that happen in and around your home from week to week, season to season. You can even take Cocoon with you when you move, and it will learn to adapt to your new home without the need to reset.
What Cocoon learns
- Cocoon listens for low-frequency sound waves, Subsound, created by the movement of objects and air which is inaudible to human ears.
- Cocoon does not listen or learn from the audible range, so no speech, music, beeps or buzzers will be taken into account (unless they create Subsound that is!).
When Cocoon learns
- Armed / Away - When you are away from home and Cocoon is armed, Cocoon regards the home as empty, and is listening and learning at all times.
- Disarmed / Home - When you return home and Cocoon disarms automatically, your Cocoon will listen and learn for 15 minutes so that it gathers the same sounds generated when someone is entering your home.
How Cocoon learns
- Cocoon compares the two states to establish a 'Worry' level, which it then uses when choosing whether to alert you to unusual or unlearned activity.
- The time taken for Cocoon to complete its Subsound profile can vary depending on the Cocoon 'Household'. We suggest between 7-10 days for an accurate profile to be established.
- Busy homes with lots of comings and goings will tend to fill up the Home profile quickly, but the Away profile may take a little longer. For quieter households, the Away profile is likely to complete sooner than the Home as the Cocoon will be armed a lot more, with only one or two disarm events per day to learn from.
- For Cocoon to continually learn from its environment, the machine learning gradually depreciates over time to allow the newly learned behaviour to fill up its memory ensuring that you're up to date at all times.
In the first few days
- Initially, you should expect to experience either a few too many or too few alerts from your Cocoon until some machine learning has taken place. This is because of the default 'Worry' level that Cocoon ships with.
- During this time we'd recommend minimising any tests on your Cocoon in favour of viewing your Subsound in the app. You can do this by going to the app menu and tapping 'See Subsound'.
Making sure your Cocoon is learning correctly
- It's important to ensure that correct learning behaviour can take place. Cocoon should be armed when empty, and disarmed when occupied. One-off events are fine, but regular instances where there are people at Home when Cocoon is armed will increase the 'Worry' level.
- Inviting all members of your household to Cocoon will result in correct auto-arming and disarming as long as everyone has location/data/Wifi enabled.
- When you have regular visitors such as cleaners or dog walkers, it's advisable to manually disarm your Cocoon as soon as you receive an alert. Remember to re-arm when they've left!
- If you're manually arming your Cocoon at night when you are home, we'd recommend disarming as soon as you wake to prevent the Subsound becoming learned. Moving forward, we'll be working on a 'Night-time' mode so that Cocoon manages this for you. Please keep an eye out for updates on this!
