Sometimes there are factors that can cause geo issues that are not directly associated with the Cocoon app or functionality. Below are some of the potential causes of geo issues:
Free WiFi Networks
Some network providers, for example BT, have free WiFi hotspots scattered around some areas. These are open for BT customers to use and tend to have the network name "BT WiFi with FON". We have found that these WiFi networks may have an impact on the way Cocoon works. If you're experiencing any geo issues at all, please ensure that you have tried 'forgetting' these networks.
Furthermore, many free WiFi networks require a sign-in from the user and before you have signed in, your smartphone does not have access to the WiFi network. During this time, Cocoon will not be able to communicate with your smartphone and will therefore not be able to keep you updated with any alerts or geo-transitions.
Workplace WiFi Networks
We have also found that some workplace networks have firewalls in place for internet security. Such firewalls can have an impact on Cocoon's function, and if you suspect that this may be a cause to your geo issues, please test by disconnecting from these networks and using mobile data only, if possible.
False Router Locations
When GPS isn't accessible, your location will then be determined by a database of routers and their locations - if you connect to a router, it can be assumed that you are within range of the router and your location can therefore be assumed.
However, this database may be outdated and may cause your location to be inaccurate. In order to test this, please try the following:
- Open the Cocoon app, navigate to "Your Cocoon" and confirm your location is correct on the Cocoon map
- Open Google Maps and confirm that your location is correct and stable (without any flickering)
- In Google Maps, open the menu and navigate to Settings > "Location Accuracy Tips". If nothing happens, then your location settings are already optimised.
Other Apps
Some apps that claim to optimise your smartphone's battery or performance may restrict certain services from being used, such as WiFi, mobile data or location services. If you have tried the above steps and your location is correct in both Google Maps and the Cocoon app, we may ask you to test by uninstalling any optimisation apps or security apps that potentially prevent your Cocoon app from accessing certain services.
